This is a lot of work but this is how you save big bucks. You don’t just need to find a good contractor. You need to find a good contractor at the right time. I find that if a contractor is in need of work at a given time then they’ll give you a good price. If not then their bid will likely be thicker. Be careful in relying on a contractor who was recommended by a neighbor. That contractor’s situation may have changed.
Secondly, it can offer a bit of protection for your walls as well. Plaster and dry wall are susceptible to nicks, scuffs, and other small imperfections over time. Wainscoting can be very functional in reducing those problems. Unfortunately, having a lot of wood working in your home can be expensive, especially when you hire someone to do the labor.
The vanity created a few more problems as it butted up against the tub – and, again, had been built to last. We were initially concerned we might have to refinish the outside of the tub as there were some marks left by removing the vanity, but after consulting our local hardware-store guru, we were able to apply a patching medium for a seamless finish.
If your room is wider than the shower base, fur in the walls as needed to butt against the ends of the shower base (see Photo 14). Our bathroom is 6 ft. wide, so we added a floor-to-ceiling 2×6 wall at the showerhead end and a shorter 2×6 wall at the opposite end. We made that wall only 43 in. above the floor so we could use the top of the wall to hold shampoo and other shower supplies. The shower base usually comes with a special 2-in. drain fitting that you connect to the drain line (Fig. B).
