I don’t know about you but it’s hard for me to make a run to the store in less than two hours. Every item you have on site and ready for the contractor is time and effort saved in labor cost. And, I’ll tell you, anytime your workers leave your project there’s no guarantee when they’ll come back. This drives construction managers crazy, too. This time is hard to track. If you choose to have the contractor buy the materials then make sure you have an agreed upon budget for these items in your contract.
So I designed all the windows and doors (except one window) to fit around the five plate glass sheets that were originally part of a display cabinet in the local DIY store. The glass for the main window, looking out from the home DIY workshop bench, was one half of a double glazed window which a builder salvaged for me when we had our living room replaced with French Doors; the other half of the double glazed window was stored and later used as a window in the side of a small potting shed.
These things should all be considered when selecting the appropriate type of window treatments. Do you need to filter light (semi-sheers and similar types of curtains), block it (light-blocking shades, blinds, and/or heavier draperies), create privacy, not block a great view, especially if it is as grand as a New York skyline? All of these lighting-related factors should be considered in deciding on window treatments.
Fixtures and appliances: If you replace any of your current fixtures and appliances in the bathroom-countertops, bathtub, toilet, sink, etc.-this will increase the cost because the professionals will need to remove the originals and install the new ones. You can save on this cost by refinishing some of the appliances or buying the materials yourself.
